What do they need?

In 2004 the Moken people were confronted with a tsunami that left their villages destroyed. This time, however, a fire was the main cause of the damage in their villages. Unlike with the tsunami, the Moken were unable to retrieve any of their belongings, and were left with virtually nothing. As the fire spread on that Sunday February 3rd  evening, women and children were evacuated first. Within a day, the Thai government sent resources.

 

A month after the fire, the skeletons of the houses have been built, nevertheless, construction has come to a halt as the Moken are still waiting for building materials. Another concern that haunts Moken, other than not being able to finish building their houses, is the limited space in which they were allowed to build houses. This means that, even as families expand, the plots of lands in which their houses are located do not have any space for expansion. The Moken people are still waiting to hear if the government will give them more space to build their homes.

 

A final concern that the Moken have has to do with funding -- this is where you come in. Everytime there is a crisis, there has been an overwhelming amount of support… but that usually only lasts the first few months. As an endangered community, the Moken people are in constant need of support. This is especially true as more often than not, the Moken face complications with the government, or find that their land and customs run the risk of becoming mere tourist attractions.
